Commercial Skip!

May 11th, 2012 · 6 Comments

I know I just posted yesterday about my new DVR. Well, this is big enough that it requires a separate post.

Dish just announced (and downloaded to my DVR) a new feature: “Auto Hop“. This is basically automatic commercial skip. It only works on the prime time shows recorded with “Prime Time Any Time”, and it only starts working a few hours after the programs were recorded, but then when you start playing a show you are given the option to skip commercials.

I can’t believe that the networks and their advertisers will let this stand, but I’m going to enjoy it while I can. I hate commercials and always skip them anyway, but this takes the hassle out of it.

That may be the best DVR feature ever!

I’m afraid the downside of this is going to be more product placement and embedded commercials.

Toyota seems to be doing this a lot. One of the worst examples is in the show “Bones”. At least twice during different episodes of the show, two characters have been driving down the road in their Toyota, when they started discussing some nice feature of the car. It was so obviously a commercial that I don’t know how the actors can do it without grimacing.

It really distracts from the flow of the show too, taking time out from the action and plot. It lodges in my craw, and I have trouble watching the rest of the show.

Now if Dish can find a way to skip this too…

I just love that cute little kangaroo that asks me if I want to skip the commercials…

That little ‘Roo shows up in the corner each time a commercial is skipped too.

You do understand that if there were no commercials you would have to pay a LOT more for your TV right?

I hate them too but I understand they are needed to keep the cost down.

I noticed that I the Hopper gave me the option to skip past my commercials on Monday when I went to go watch my Animation Domination shows (part of my PrimeTime Anytime recordings). A Dish co-worker told me that as long as I have Auto Hop enabled on my DVR it will always give this option. So I’m thinking sweet no more commercials, sounds like a win, win situation to me.
