From my kids accomplishments, to my heretical perspective of the world

Cornell

April 21st, 2010 · 7 Comments

Devon has decided to pursue graduate studies in Applied Physics at Cornell University, in Ithica, NY. Cornell is ranked 7th in the nation for Physics graduate programs (US News and World Report), so he could have done a lot worse.

He had originally applied for the PHD program in Physics, but later regretted it, feeling that the 6 or so years it would require were too much. When they offered him admission to the MS program instead, he jumped at it.

In the mean time, he has given notice at his job in Rancho Cucamonga, California, and is preparing to spend the summer in Taiwan intensively studying Chinese and having fun.

(Interesting note: Mom has traced our ancestry back to the Cornell family. We apparently are distant cousins, many times removed, of Ezra Cornell, the founder of the University.)

Good for him! Interesting how many of our family are reconnected to Western NY. Not only did we all come from there but Dale and family still live there, Dianna’s brother Greg is now in Rochester, and now Devon in Ithica.

Taiwan? Maybe he will meet a bride there also????

Well, 3 -4 months seems a little short time to establish a relationship and get to know someone well enough to marry…

Maybe you can get a family discount on tuition. Just throw that Cornell name around a bit.

Mom says Cornell has one of the most beautiful campuses in the nation. (Of course, I’m not sure how many other campuses she has visited, but I’m sure it’s pretty back there in the spring, summer and fall.)

    Congratulations, Devon!

I know that it used to be much prettier than U of A, or ASU, but they aren’t much to compare with–flat, in the city, terribly spread out, lots of other differences. I’m still working on the relationship; I know that Devon’s 11th great-grandparents were George and Susan (Casse) Cornell. Ezra, the founder of the University, was their descendant. They lived in England in the 1500’s.

I doubt that it is any nicer than UC Santa Cruz, with the buildings scattered in the redwood forest.

Congrats to Devon! I was thinking the same thing about UCSC Daryl.

Ithaca is a great college town in a beautiful part of the state. Many of Karens, Jens and Davids friends went to Cornell. It is a wonderful university. Good luck to Devon.
