21st Century Internet

April 1st, 2010 · 6 Comments

I have had Earthlink DSL for 10(?) years now. It was about the best I could get when I started, and over the years they have slowly increased the speed, from around 768 kbps (down) initially to about 2.5Mbps (320 kbps up) the last couple of years. However the price has stayed high ($50/month) and the speed is now relatively slow.

So I finally upgraded to cable (Cox). Wow — what a difference! I get 12Mbps down regularly, at times up to 20Mbps. Upload runs around 2Mbps, at times up to 3. And it costs slightly less than DSL at $47.

Maybe I can start streaming Netflix movies with reasonable quality now.

Wow! Next time I’m at your place I will download the newest update for my GPS maps again. You know you are making me feel really bad with my satellite connection, but then again, you can’t be on the internet while sitting in the middle of nowhere.

I’m glad your getting such blazing speed. How can I check my connection speed? Is there a program you have to download or just a place on the internet?

    Dale,
There are several internet sites you can go to. The simplest one is probably Speedtest.net.

Also DSL Reports has a number of tests. Besides several speed tests, they can check your connection quality.

WOW! Very nice! Yes you can easily stream Netflix now. I do it to my Blu Ray and love it.

That’s some healthy speed there though.

You’re welcome to use my internet anytime you need something large Richard. It’s not 20 MB but it is a lot faster than satellite.

I have Cox, but I don’t get that kind of speed. But I think it’s the instability of my internal wiring.
    Congratulations.

Donna, Maybe you are on a different plan…?
    I have the “Preferred” plan.
