Rochester Institute of Optics

Devon is in Rochester, NY this weekend where he was invited by the Rochester University Institute of Optics.

This is one of the universities he applied to for Graduate Study. They accepted him, and he’s there now to review their offer.

The Institute, funded partly by the US Department of Energy, has one of the most powerful lasers in the world. Devon did most of his under-graduate work on high-energy lasers, and is interested in their programs. He has some other offers he will consider too, and it’s possible he will put off graduate school for a year in order to travel and be a young man.

Devon gave notice at his job in California as he prepares to take the summer off and decide his future.

Sounds like a fun time as he plots his career and make plans for the rest of his life.

With both Kodak and Bausch and Lomb behind it, it sounds most impressive. Both are founders and leaders in their fields.

I was in Rochester today to see Dave and Lisa. It would have been nice to see Devon, but Dave said he was running on a tight schedule and didn’t think it would this time.

That’s so cool! I’m glad he’s taking after his dad and seeing stuff before settling down. Sometimes I wish I had done that.

Has Devon interviewed at any other schools? I remember what a beautiful campus Cornell has–“High Above Cauga’s Water”. I was there once for a 4-H Club Conference, and there is no more beautiful place on earth (in the summer).

Besides, the Cornells are relatives of ours, great grandparents, many times over, in the 1600s.

Actually, he just heard back from Cornell that they will accept him into their graduate program. That’s probably where he will end up.
