Thunderbird 3.0

December 8th, 2009 · 10 Comments

Mozilla has released a new version of the Thunderbird email client.

It’s got some nice new features; tabbed emails is the main one that stands out at first.

I’ve just installed it, which was painless, and so far it looks very good.

Unfortunately my calendar plug-in isn’t compatible (yet), but it was synced with Google Calendar and my Droid, so nothing was lost.

    Are you using Sunbird Calendar?

  • 2 Daryl // Dec 8, 2009 at 10:23 pm

Yes, I was — or actually I was using the “Lightning” version of Sunbird that integrates into Thunderbird. I had it synced to the Google Calendar, which is synced to my new Droid smart phone. That way my desktop was synced to my phone.

But there isn’t a version of Lightning available for the new version of TBird.

Maybe I should just run Sunbird — integrating it with Thunderbird doesn’t seem to provide much advantage, just one fewer program running on my desktop…

Or maybe just leave a browser tab open to the online Google calendar and leave out a step…

What, no link in your post to make it easy to get to Mozilla? Guess I’ll type it in myself and download it. 😉
    Thanks for the heads up!

    I guess I got lazy.

    But it’s not hard:
    Thunderbird!

I installed Tbird 3.0 tonight, and I’m frustrated. I can’t figure out how to sort my folders. I use more than one account and I want all the subfolders for each account to fall under its matching inbox, but they don’t. They list alphabetically, so I get Inbox, Inbox, Sent, Sent, Trash, Trash, Junk, Junk, and all my archives in between. I searched online, but don’t find any helpful info. Have you figured this out?

I think I figured it out. You can grab and move them, which actually copies them, but then you can delete the folders you no longer want that are duplicated in other areas. I was afraid at first that I would delete all of them and all the messages in them, but it just deleted the incidence I didn’t want and left the ones I hadn’t touched.

I like that it will group message threads like Gmail does.

I just installed it a little while ago. The only weird thing is I have 2 Trash folders. I have no idea why. Can’t delete them and they both seem like the same basic folder. Other than that it seems very nice.

Donna — are you sure you didn’t have “Smart Folders” (or another folder option) enabled?

On the right side of the bar just above the Folder list are two tiny arrows. Clicking them will cycle you through different folder views.

I only see 2 Trash folders when it’s set to Smart Folders.

Not that smart if you ask me.
