Almost Siberia

January 6th, 2007 · 8 Comments

We drove up to Snowflake, Arizona today for Derek to pick out his new Siberian Husky puppy. Here’s the one he chose.

Derek's Puppy-to-be

Snowflake is about 20 miles north of Showlow, in the White Mountains. It was pretty cold up there! (OK, almost Siberia is an exaggeration, but for a Phoenician it was freezing!).

We have to wait another week or so before the puppy will be big enough to leave its mother, but he wanted an early choice of the litter. Another family got there just after we did and chose 2.

Siberia would be a great place for that puppy. Even Snowflake would be decent. But Phoenix? I feel so sorry for that puppy going to live in the middle of a desert. A Mexican Hairless would be a much better choice but I guess they aren’t quite as cute. 😉

Cute! Male or female? Has he come up with any names yet?

He will just have to build an air conditioned dog house (and I am not being facetious). People who have cold weather animals here have to be smarter than the pet. We humans have a choice of residence, but the animal has to depend on us to be smarter than he is. I am waiting anxiously for the name of my great grand dog, as well as the sex.

    Male. Maybe “Apollo”.

They are beautiful dogs. I’m sure the whole family will enjoy him.

We’ve had a lot of discussion on how to care for him. Derek has done lots of research.
The breeder said she sells most of her dogs to families in Phoenix or Tucson, and they do OK. During the summer you need to fill a pool so they can get wet, make sure they have shade, and during the worst months provide a cooled room or dog house. We will work something out, but we will make sure he is comfortable.

I want to see a picture a year from now, to see who is holding whom!
