AVG is still free

November 12th, 2006 · 3 Comments

Those of you who run the free version of AVG virus scan software may have received notices lately that the version you have is about to expire, and that you have to upgrade to a new version. If you follow their links, you are taken to a page where they offer to sell you the new version.

They don’t make it obvious, but you can still get a free copy of the new version here.

You are right. It is not obvious. I had to look around a bit when I installed the upgrade last week.

Sneeky. But the update was easy and simple.

It’s hard to complain too much when they provide free software, and I can’t blame them for trying to get people to buy the commercial version.

Nero Burning software used to be free too, until they established a reputation and customer base. Now they charge as much as anyone. I’m afraid that AVG may do the same some day.
