Loss of Wisdom

Filed under: Family Updates — Daryl @ 10:39 pm

Loss of Wisdom Teeth, that is. Derek had his all yanked out today. He’s up in his room on Vicodin and Ibuprofen, holding an ice bag against his face with one hand, playing “World of Warcraft” with the other.

He decided to do it without the sedation, just local anaesthetic. He was uncomfortable with the idea of being “out”. Maybe he was thinking about the Seinfeld episode where Jerry woke up with his shirt untucked.

Anyway, he said it wasn’t too bad.

  1. I’ve had three of mine done that way (local anesthesia) and the fourth one is peeking through the gum and needs to be pulled as well. But I didn’t have mine all done at once! Glad he’s up to playing WoW.

  2. At your age, they are just now peeking through?
Feels like there should be an age-related wisdom joke there somewhere…

  4. I was around 20, I think.
I think the rule is that the earlier you get them all out, the wiser you become.
    Sorry Donna.

  5. I will remind you of the title of your post here. I think it supports that I have retained 1/4th of my wisdom while you boys lost 100% of yours years ago. Since my last tooth is asking to come out, I guess I have to exercise that remaining wisdom in deciding whether to have it pulled now or not. Do I want to end up like my brothers? 😛

  6. I still have 3 of the 4 and have had no problems with any of them. I don’t know why the 4th never came in. I think the size of one’s mouth has something to do with it. On occasion I have been accused of having a big mouth and not enough wisdom to keep it closed.

Dianna had only 2 that ever came in and they were pulled when she was a teen.

  7. I think there may be a tendency for dentists to pull them before they cause problems. Probably in a lot of cases they never would.

I could see on Derek’s X-Rays that two of them were coming in sideways, pressing against the base of the teeth in front. They didn’t look good. The two on the top looked OK, but what good would they be without matching teeth on the bottom?

They also claim that they are so far back they are hard to clean.
