I’m flying out to California tomorrow (Thursday) morning to see if I can fix Devon’s computer. My return is scheduled for Friday evening, but if things go very well I may try to come back earlier. We’ll see!

Reminds me of Richard’s eulogy about dad. He would make a trip to fix a broken car. Since you wouldn’t be very good at that this might be Devon’s rememberance of you. “My dad flew to California to fix my computer”. Ok, when I actually see it in writing it looks kind of silly.
Wouldn’t it be cheaper to just buy him a new one and save the airfare?

Well, comparing all the options I cancelled my flight and decided to drive instead. Short notice flights like this are expensive!
5 hours of driving is almost worth avoiding the hassle of flying anyway, and I can take more spare parts with me and be more flexible about when I am done.

When I first read this earlier this morning I said out loud, “Why doesn’t he drive?” I was able to make the trip from just north of LA to downtown Phoenix in 5 1/2 hours so you should be able t to make it to the Pomona area in under 5. Fighting with airlines, queueing, security screening, restricted to their schedules… all things I avoid like the plague if I can. You can probably get there just as fast by driving if you count from the time you leave home to the time you actually get to Devon’s, and you can do it when you want to. And there is very little change you luggage will get lost.
I hate flying anymore. It used to be fun, but those days are long gone. Unfortunately, I have to get on a plane this afternoon to fly to Detroit. That’s a little far to drive for the weekend.

Hmmm… I was just sitting here wondering if you had updated your blog since your entry about a quick trip to California, and lo and behold, a new entry about a quick trip to California.
Drive safely! (One of the benefits of flying — it’s safer than driving. But you’re all right about the hassles.)

Well, I’m here and the computer is fixed, sort of. Turned out he had a bad video card that was causing random restarts, and one of the restarts corrupted the hard drive. So one problem compounded on another.
I put in an old video card, fixed his hard drive and he looks ready to go (I’m writing this on his computer). However, it’s not as fast a 3D video card, so he won’t be able to play his games so well. I guess he’ll have to spend more time on homework. Hmmmm… Maybe it will take me a while to RMA the faster one…
Dinner with Devon and Keri tonight, then off to fix Gisele’s brother’s computer, where I’ll spend the night, then back home tomorrow morning.

Flying…it’s all about perspective. I love flying by myself. The thought of sitting on an airplane for one or more hours to read, rest, think and let someone else serve me drinks and snacks sounds wonderful. Especially since I usually travel with a struggling toddler, bored six-year-old, heavy diaper bags, car seat and stroller. Throw in a few wary or annoyed looks from other passengers, a spilled drink or two, and no place to change a diaper and I don’t know why I ever go anywhere.

My computer is acting up too. Can you come by?
Comment by Don — January 27, 2006 @ 12:19 pm
Darn, I just got home before I read your request, Don. You’ll have to wait until I drive back over tomorrow.

Robin,
I still feel that way about international travel IF I can go business class. Room to stretch out, good food, nobody outside the plane can bother me for several hours, nothing to do but read, watch the movies or sleep. But I think these short (1 – 2 hours) trips are more trouble than they’re worth.
Unfortunately, Intel doesn’t even send employees business class anymore, much less ex-employees traveling on their own. Maybe when the kids are through college I will feel able to splurge once in a while…

You’re driving back over tomorrow? (Or is that a joke?)
Comment by Donna — January 27, 2006 @ 8:39 pm
I’m not sure, but I’m guessing it must be an attempt at a joke.

I think I’ve been able to fix my computer pretty much everytime it’s been broken. I’ve actually got 7 computers in my house that are all working fine right now. I should probably find some wood to knock on.

One way or another I’ve always been successful fixing a computer, even if it means replacing the motherboard, CPU, case, hard drive, RAM, keyboard, mouse and monitor. 😉

Ah, but at least you know how to do all those things. What happened to your son?
Comment by Don — January 28, 2006 @ 8:41 am
One of his sons inherited that talent. Derek is extremely handy with the technical gadgets.

And the other one must have said, “I want hair!” 😉

Daryl, I think you have the family record for most comments posted on a single entry.
Comment by Donna — January 28, 2006 @ 11:27 pm
At least meaningless comments.
