Firefox 2

October 27th, 2006 · 9 Comments

As my brother Don noted in his blog, there is a new major release to the Firefox web browser; version 2.0.

I’ve been running it for a couple of days now and it seems fine. Most of my extensions (including my beloved AdBlock) work fine with it. It has a new spell check, so when you are writing something like this blog on a web form you can check all the spelling in the form before you submit. Just right click in the form, and make sure that “Spell check this field” is checked.

A few other minor changes, but I feel right at home with it; it looks and feels just about the same.

I am also using the new version and it seems fine to me too. Are you using the automatic filter updating extension for Adblock? It is called something like Filterset G. I installed it a few weeks ago and it has eliminated any ads. It checks every few days for a new list and updates it. You can still keep your manually assigned blocks in place too. It is at http://www.pierceive.com/

I use Adblock Plus now, which comes with several options for updated filters. I also don’t see ads anymore.

If enough people start using Adblock, I wonder if that will affect advertising rates and eventually reduce the amount of free stuff on the internet?

I installed Adblock Plus on the desktop machine and am still using Adblock with the Filterset G subscription. I don’t see any difference between them. Do you know if there is any advantage to Plus?

You can learn something about how the two extensions were developed here.

I don’t think there are many significant functional differences. The developer of ABP claims to have a better user interface. I like that it installs a button on the toolbar with common options (whitelist a page, whitelist a domain, etc), instead of having to go through the tools menu.

I understand that AB is currently dormant, so it’s possible that you will lose compatibility with future releases of FF.

Do you realize that this type of blog gets replies from only the Computer Nuts? I, for one, read it and say “Huh?”

Great commentary, guys! I had been wondering about those functional extension developments and user interfaces.

Donna, I’m not sure if you’re being sarcastic or if you suddenly got geeky…

I’m thinking she’s probably being sarcastic but I don’t have the social skills to tell…
