65″ LCD TV

October 16th, 2006 · 11 Comments

I just bought another TV.

If you remember, I bought the 60″ Sony SXRD rear projection LCOS last spring. After having it in my house for 3 weeks, I took it back. Since then I’ve been waiting for something better to come available in my price range.

Today I brought home a 65″ LCD TV. I think I like it a lot, but I have a month to make sure.

It’s sure big.

Wowsers! I looked up the spec’s and the price. Spec’s look really good. Price looks astronomical! Cheapest I found was over 9G. Obviously, your price range for a TV is a lot more than mine.

9Gs! That is not a TV, that is a small car!

I got it for a little less, but not much. Gisele thinks I’m crazy; maybe she’s right!

    My wife agrees with Gisele………

I thought $2700 for my 55″ Mitsubishi projection was high! Of course I got it about 5 years ago but inflatiion hasn’t tripled in that time.

Anyways, I think if you can afford it and it’s something you really enjoy then more power to you.

Btw, I’ve got a radio I bet you would really like and I’ll sell it cheap. 😉

So, you have had it for a while now. What do you think? Are you going to keep this one?

I was in San Francisco most of the time since buying the TV, so I’ve really only had 3-4 days with it. But so far I am pleased.

I don’t see any of the “rear projection graininess” (also called “silk-screen-effect”) that I saw with the Sony. Since it’s not RP, that makes sense. Many people didn’t notice it, but it distracted me a lot.

I think the colors might have been slightly better on the Sony, but only slightly, and I’m quite happy with the color on this one. Contrast down in the black level is not quite as good as with a CRT, but it doesn’t bother me. Resolution and detail is extremely good. Brightness is comparable to a CRT, and better than a plasma, especially in a bright room. View angle is excellent; no noticeable picture degradation off to the sides.

So I still have three weeks to ponder, but right now I am leaning towards keeping. If I watch a few more HD football games, I’ll probably never want to let it go!

We were at Costco a few days ago and saw several brands of LCD HDTV’s lined up together. Most of the brands were pretty good, but they had the Vizio brand that I see being advertised on TV lately. If anyone watches one of the Vizio sets next to anything else they would never sell any Vizios. The picture quality explains their low price.

Vizio is one of the “bargain” brands for LCDs. Sharp and Sony are generally considered the best, with Samsung not far behind.

Prices keep coming down, and quality improves with each generation.
