Derek is doing the long jump, high jump and triple jump this year in track.
Last week there was an invitational track meet with 8 schools participating. Derek won the long jump event with the longest individual jump of 19′ 7″. Not bad to be the best out of 8 schools!
There is an asterisk, however. This was a “minor” invitational, and a couple of the more competitive schools were saving their best for the major invitationals. Nevertheless, it was still an excellent performance.

Wow! That’s a tremendous jump. I assume there were some athletes in Gisele’s family somewere? I know this did not come from the Lafferty side.

I’m trying to picture in my mind just how far 19′ 7″ is. It boggles. Let’s see, that’s longer than the length of Dad’s first Masonite trailer. Farther than 2 Intel cubes side by side. Wider than the width of my driveway. Almost 4 line markers on a football field. More than twice the viewing distance of Richard’s chair to TV. Almost the NCAA 3 point line to the basket.
Whew! That’s a long jump.

All good comparisons, except not sure about the football field “line markers” — aren’t they 5 *yards* apart? A 20-yard jump would truly be tremendous!

Oops. I guess I can’t even claim that I meant the small one yard markers, can I? How about I switch it to “Over 6 small markers on a football field!”

Don’t you all realize that he is just like his grandmother. I am not only a long jumper, but you know how fast I can run these days. Nothing has yet been invented to measure my speed and agility!
Good going, Derek!
