Laid Off

October 15th, 2007 · 6 Comments

Devon’s company SECo has just closed their Pasadena office and everyone was laid off. It looks like they are going to file for bankruptcy.

He doesn’t know what he is going to do yet, but he’ll figure something out. He was only planning to work for a year before going on to graduate school anyway, so it’s not a career-changer, but it is still unplanned for and unexpected.

If he finds another job in another state he will have to break a lease, which may cost some money.

Looks like he’s getting a dose of real life.

Oh, too bad. We are on a hiring freeze here. And I hear Intel is laying off another 2%. Hard times for corporations, which translates to hard times for employees. Certainly, this will be harder on a lot of Devon’s co-workers who are supporting families. At least Devon is free of that burden.

Good luck, Devon! Will he get a severance package?

He said he only gets paid for accrued vacation. Not even 2-week notice or anything.like that. Today is his last day.

Boeing is hiring. Have him send me his resume.

My work is hiring too. But, I doubt it’s worth the move.

While it is a tough thing to have happen to him, I am sure he will be fine. With his talent he will find something soon. You may remember that Chris was laid off from Peterbilt early this year, but he found an even better paying job that he likes more with Raytheon.

Seems strange that a company so close to the edge was still adding personnel. It makes you wonder if they knew what they were doing, but of course I don’t know the details.

I am sure it will work out fine, and you are right — welcome to life.

Tough break, Devon. But you’re too talented to remain unemployed for long.
