We drove back up to Snowflake yesterday (through falling snow and slush on the road) and brought Derek’s new Siberian Husky home with us.
We built a pen for him in the corner of the kitchen, and Derek spent the night on the sofa right next to him. In fact when I woke up this morning the puppy was in bed with him, just his head sticking out from under the covers. Both were asleep.
Lots of whining and even a little yipping, as the poor 6-week old puppy pines for his mother and siblings. But he’s getting lots of love and attention here, so I’m sure he’ll be over it in a few days.
Derek still hasn’t decided on a name, and the camera battery died so I don’t have many new pictures, but we’ll try to get some more up soon.

Does he have blue eyes? Which side of the family do you think they came from? I want to see him so much–maybe I can come over on Tuesday; tomorrow is Hand and Foot day. Do I need to wear a surgical mask and rubber gloves so that I don’t contaminate him?
I’ll bet he just loves this weather! There should be something good about this cold spell.

Anyone can come see him, (as long as you have had your distemper and rabies shots) but you all better hurry — he will grow up fast.
Derek has officially named him Apollo.

He is a very cute puppy. I suspect by the time I get over next he will not be so little. Apollo is a good name for him.

I did take a couple of pictures, but the first one was blurry, and the camera battery died on the second one. I was disappointed; it was pretty cute.
He slept more last night, and seems to be adjusting quickly. He still demands lots of attention, with yipping and howling when he feels neglected. He’s eating well, and his bowels don’t seem to have any problems. So far he hasn’t pooped in the house, though there have been lots of yellow puddles.
He loves to romp in the back yard, chasing Derek. The tall buffalo grass comes up almost to his belly, so he can’t run very quickly.

Puppies are so cute. He looks like fun. I assume puddle patrol is Derek’s job?

I told Nathan that Derek had a new puppy, and he said “I wish I could see him!” So I promised I would take him to see him very soon. I’ve heard Siberian Hiskies are especially intelligent dogs, and enjoy pulling children in wagons. Maybe we’ll have to try that out!

Hegs–I have a pleasant appointment in the AM (mammogram), and it’s so cold that I thought I’d go over after that. It’s too cold to scooter anywhere. Besides, he will have gained ten pounds and grown a foot in a week. I’ll be glad to go with you, too, any time. I love dogs!

Welcome to the Lafferty clan, Apollo! You haven’t mentioned how Gisele is adjusting to the new arrival. He will definitely be all grown up by the time we get back to Mesa. Bummer!

Gisele is quite happy with him. She had a dog while growing up and loves puppies.
Derek is practicing “tough love” on him; teaching him that he has to stay in the pen by himself sometimes, no matter how much he whines, yips and howls. That’s hard on all of us!

I looked up Apollo in Greek mythology. He was the son of Zeus, and second in importance only to him. He was god of the sun, and lots of other things also. The little guy has to work hard to earn his name.
