My old Kyocera PDA/phone is on it’s last legs. I can’t dial numbers from the keypad anymore, only from Contacts, so I bought a Samsung i760 smartphone this weekend.
Mostly I like it, and will probably keep it. The slide-out hardware keyboard is pretty nice. I liked Palm just fine, but I guess Windows Mobile has its advantages.
I think the iPhone is a little nicer in some ways. I thought about switching cell providers so I could get it, but considering that the whole family (including Mom) is on my Verizon account, it just didn’t make sense. I don’t think this phone lags much behind it, and in some ways is better.

The specs I found on line indicate that it is a proprietary Samsung processor.

Looks like it should be a good replacement for your old phone. The biggest complaint the reviewers had was that it was large and bulky, but it looks like it might even be a little smaller than your Kyocera. Is it?

It’s a little lighter and a lot thinner.
The Kyocera was a flip, so folded it has a slightly smaller footprint. But the thickness meant it was bulkier in my pocket.
That’s the main thing I miss — the flip form factor. I could throw it in my pocket with keys and change and never worry about scratching the screen. I feel I have to be a lot more careful with the new one.
I don’t know why they don’t make flip smart phones anymore.

Looks like a decent phone. The main strong point of the iPhone is the browsing ability. Once they go 3G it will be far beyond most other phones. The iPhone also has the iPod built in which I love on my ride to work and back. I would agree though it’s probably not worth switching networks unless of course you got everyone an iPhone and then they would love you forever. 😉

The i760 also has a web browser and WiFi built in. It’s got a decent browser (Picsel – much better than IE). For two months I’ve got free EVDO, which I think is faster than the broadband network the iPhone uses. Of course after 2 months it costs like $40/month. It is not worth that!
The i760 also is a music player, though not as fancy as the iPod.
Yeah, right, I’ll buy Gisele, Devon, Derek and Mom all iPhones!

Does this new wonderful instrument also work as a telephone? You haven’t called me since you purchased it, so I can’t comment on it.

Well, after about 2 weeks with the new phone, I took it back and returned to my old Kyocera smart phone.
Three complaints:
One: I’m too used to a flip phone, and hate having the screen exposed all the time. I’m afraid of scratching it, or pushing the wrong button, etc.
Two: The buttons on the sides were poorly placed and too exposed to casual touching. I was all the time accidentally hanging up on someone, or starting a program.
Three: The sync cable and charger cable were separate. I ended up never syncing the phone to my computer because it was too much trouble to move it from the charger.
The three things together just added up to too much inconvenience. I’m back to my old phone until something better comes out.
I heard rumors that Apple is planning a flip version of the iPhone. That I might be interested in…

Apple is also coming out with a 3G version(iPhone 2.0) and I think it will also have a true GPS.
I really do love my iPhone. It’s one of the coolest high tech things I’ve ever owned.

He did! While he was remotely controlling my anti-virus, I, not knowing, jumped in and started to play Pogo. He gave up, told me to play, and he would look at it next day.
