The Mozilla Foundation has released a new version of their Thunderbird Email client, Version 1.5.
The release notes are sparse and vague. Looks like mostly security and stability improvements, with a few new features. One improvement is that it will recognize headers set by Spam Assassin on your mail server, and automatically classify the message as junk.
I downloaded it and ran the install, and it found and replaced my version 1.07 with no problems.
I just saw that you can set a filter to automatically delete messages from the POP server based on criteria you set. I set up a filter that will delete messages that have “****SPAM****” in the subject, so I guess I don’t even need the “recognize SpamAssassin” improvement mentioned in the paragraph above. Don’t do this unless you are comfortable with the way your filters are set on SpamAssassin, or you will lose valid email!

I haven’t seen the ****SPAM**** header on my mail in months, possibly since we switched to Plesk. Maybe that’s why so much junk downloads to my mailbox.

I get some mail marked ****SPAS**** but not nearly as much as I would like. I know this is because I lost my preferences file. I would sure like to get a good set of rules in SpamAssassin again. Seems like Plesk was not very friendly about the way it maintained the rules and I lost our settings. If I could ever get a good set again I would store them somewhere so I could replace them if they were blown away. Then I would set anything identified by SpamAssassin to be automatically dumped in my junk folder based on the filter.

I find Thunderbird does a pretty good job of deciding something is spam. I will have to get 1.5 and see how it is.
