{"id":191,"date":"2008-09-25T15:53:45","date_gmt":"2008-09-25T22:53:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/daryllafferty.com\/blog\/2008\/09\/25\/the-new-screenwriter\/"},"modified":"2008-09-25T16:17:54","modified_gmt":"2008-09-25T23:17:54","slug":"the-new-screenwriter","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/daryllafferty.com\/blog\/2008\/09\/25\/the-new-screenwriter\/","title":{"rendered":"The New Screenwriter"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Benjamin Bates is the son of my old and good friend Don Bates (since our days together at Flowing Wells High School), who are both also my colleagues in the creation of the <a href=\"http:\/\/aznb.com\">aznb.com<\/a> websites.<br \/>\n<center><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.batesbrothers.com\/images\/benjamin.jpg\" alt=\"Benjamin\" \/><\/center><\/p>\n<p>Benjamin has a degree in (I think) Theater Arts, and has dabbled in making a couple of short films.  He recently submitted his first full-length movie script &#8220;Walrus Eating Baloney&#8221; to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ifp.org\/nav\/about.php\">IFP<\/a> (Independent Film Producers?) contest in New York City.<\/p>\n<p>A few weeks ago he was told that he was one of 5 finalists for the grand prize, so last week he flew back to New York for the Filmmaker Awards Ceremony.  Amazingly enough, he won the $10,000 Grand Prize &#8212; first place!<\/p>\n<p>He made the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.variety.com\/article\/VR1117992451.html?categoryId=13&#038;cs=1\">Variety Magazine website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>An <a href=\"http:\/\/filmmakerslife.blogspot.com\/2008\/09\/independent-film-week.html\">industry insider&#8217;s blog<\/a> said:<\/p>\n<p><i>What was interesting is that the one guy who had never made a film at all (Benjamin Bates, &#8220;Walrus Eating Baloney&#8221;) brought the most arresting visual presentation &#8211; a sort of portfolio of pics, sketchings, writings and perhaps more that had a strong visceral appeal and displayed some real creative ambition.<\/i><br \/>\nand<br \/>\n<i>And, guess what? Benjamin Bates, the filmmaker who&#8217;d never made a film, but impressed us with his visual homework, won the Screenwriting Award for &#8220;Walrus Eating Baloney&#8221;.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Among the shoulder-rubbers and award presenters were actress <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0000639\/\">Ally Sheedy<\/a> (&#8220;Wargames&#8221;, &#8220;The Breakfast Club&#8221;, &#8220;Short Circuit&#8221;&#8230;), actor <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0180984\/\">Kevin Corrigan<\/a> (&#8220;Pineapple Express&#8221;, &#8220;Definitely, Maybe&#8221;, &#8220;Superbad&#8221;&#8230;) and other actors, directors and producers.<\/p>\n<p>Major congratulations to Benjamin!
