The Amazing Meeting

July 15th, 2011 · 9 Comments

I’m in Las Vegas this weekend at The Amazing Meeting.

The Amazing Meeting is sponsored by The Amazing Randi. Randi has been a magician for over 50 years, and like Houdini before him has devoted the later years of his life to debunking psychics, faith healers and other scams. There are over 1600 people at this, the 9th annual Amazing Meeting, but the first I have attended.

Speakers include Randi himself, Neil deGrasse Tyson, astrophysicist and the host of PBS’s Nova Science Now, Bill Nye (the Science Guy), Richard Dawkins (Biologist and popularizer of science), the magician Banachek, and many, many others that most of you have probably never heard of (though I have).

Three days of science, skepticism and critical thinking. What fun!

What! I just saw the new Harry Potter movie. Please don’t tell me that’s not a true story! 🙁

No,no, of course none of this applies to Harry Potter. That’s the one supernatural wonder that everyone agrees is real.

    And vampires. Don’t forget vampires.

When you get your head out of the clouds with all those astrophysicists, I need you for mundane things like mailing a package–unless there is a faster way than through the mail.

    Yes Donna, vampires too.

I’m back. It was amazing — 3 days of talks and panel discussions, 8 hours a day, and I was interested in every one of them. And everyone was so friendly and “reasonable”.

I hope to go again next year.

That’s what I get at church. Interesting, friendly, and reasonable people. Amazing!

That’s what it reminded me of — a large church convention, where everyone shared similar world views.
I guess your church is so large that weekly worship service is like a convention.
