Yesterday morning Gisele came downstairs to find Apollo in the midst of another seizure on the kitchen floor. He was fine in a few minutes, but I took him to the vet anyway. This was only the second time we have seen him in a seizure, the first being about a year ago. Who knows how many times it has happened when we weren’t around.
The vet took blood and will do another test for Valley Fever. Remember that we discontinued his Valley Fever medications about 2-3 months ago because his infection had decreased so much. If it has gone up again, he may have to stay on the med for the rest of his life.
The results should be back by tomorrow or Monday, and I’ll post here as soon as I hear.
Otherwise he seems fine, full of energy, frisky and happy.

The vet called today. His Valley Fever level is still very low, so now they are thinking epilepsy is more likely. That’s what they thought after the initial seizure, but when his Valley Fever count came in so high they thought “Aha! That’s it of course.”
Now they’re not so sure. We may have more tests next week. Hope they don’t propose an MRI — I doubt that my Blue Cross Blue Shield would cover it.

Wow, I just saw this entry. Poor Apollo! If it’s epilepsy though, will they be able to give him seizure meds which might be cheaper than the valley fever med? I hope it’s something easily treatable. Let us know.

I sure hope congress passes Universal Doggy Care soon.

Now, that’s enough to make anyone cry. That poor, beautiful boy, to have so many problems. It isn’t fair. A mutt from the street would probably be in great health. Should you check with the breeder to see if any of his ancestors had epilepsy?

Actually Apollo doesn’t seem troubled by it at all. The vet said that when he is in a seizure he is unconscious, and after he recovers he seems totally normal, happy and frisky.
He probably won’t be able to get a drivers license, and certainly not a pilots license, but for a dog’s life an occasional seizure seems like a pretty minor thing.
We are only supposed to be concerned if they last longer than about 5 minutes, or start happening frequently.

What! No medication? He loves taking pills so much, I thought there would be some. The Vet doesn’t sound too worried, so apparently it could be worse.

Apollo had another seizure last night. Gisele and I both saw it from beginning to end — a little frightening in the early stages as he flung himself around, convulsing on the floor. Over in about 5 minutes.
The vet said that if they don’t happen any more often than once a month, nothing needs to be done. It was just one month ago that he had the last one (that we know about) so for now we will do nothing.
