Last week Mom sent me an email. She has started doing the daily “Sudoku” puzzles in the local Tribune newspaper , but she asked me if I could create a computer program to make it easier for her to play them. She complained that she was erasing holes in the paper!

So I threw something together, and here it is, complete with help file and 5 games to practice on.

As I developed the program I had to play the games to make sure it worked, and became intrigued by them. They are more interesting than I thought at first glance; some careful logic can usually solve them pretty quickly, though for the more difficult ones I’m sometimes reduced to trial and error in places.

Anyway, give it a try and you might find that you enjoy them too.

I love Sudoko and have been doing them in the TV Guide for a few months. This’ll be fun. Thanks!

He says that they are easy. I spend too much time on some of them. I wish they would make more with a one and two star difficulty–that’s enough for my mental capacity.

I guess I’m not sure why you wrote a program. Just go to http://www.websudoku.com where there are 2 1/2 billion puzzles to choose from.

    Richard! You spoil sport!
Anyway, my program has some advantage — it highlights rows, columns and squares that are correctly completed so you can tell how you’re doing.
But it IS convenient where they’re automatically set up at sudoku.com.

The puzzles on the website I mentioned do the same sort of thing. Just hit the enter key whenever you want and it will highlight any rows or columns in error. It will also tell you how many individual squares you have wrong.

Of course, your game does have the advantage of not requiring internet access……
